Awards evening tomorrow night (11/11/14)

The awards evening takes place tomorrow night (Wednesday) at Durrell.

Please come along and help us celebrate all of our successes over the last year.

Arrive at 6pm where there will be a buffet for the athletes with the awards starting around 6:30pm.
Annual memberships now due
(07/11
/14)

Annual memberships for the club year to 30 September 2015 are now available through Entry Central (links on the Membership page). Junior and family membership options are available.

The cost of annual junior membership has increased for the first time in many years to £25. One of the main reasons for the increase is due to the use of better training facilities during the winter, the committee discussed collecting a small weekly training fee to cover the cost of facilities but it was felt that adding a small amount onto annual memberships was more practical. The club has also been considerably more active during the last year with subsidised club kit, off-island travel, coach and welfare officer training. Meanwhile weekly training and all of our own races remain free to enter. As a result we believe that the membership fee remains good value.

Run training restarts on Sunday (06/11/14)

As mentioned previously winter run training starts this Sunday at Haute Vallee School. We will meet at 10:30 and the session should be finished by 11:45. Training will again focus on technique, strength and endurance as we build a good base through the winter.

We are trialling this alternative venue for training and as well as seeing if it works for us we are also on 'probation' to show that we can use the venue responsibly. We will not have access to indoor areas of the school (I believe that the volleyball club will be using the indoors hall and they have exclusive use of those toilets). It is important that we treat the facilities with respect and don't cause damage - if the grass is too muddy we may have to keep off it to avoid causing damage to it. Please listen to and follow coaches instructions at all times.

For those doing the swim session after the run please make sure that you don't take muddy shoes and other kit into the building. You should always take a shower before entering the pool but if you have been training outdoors in bad weather please take extra care to clean any mud off before you get in the pool!

Annual awards evening
(03/11
/14)

This will take place on Wednesday 12th November at Durrell. Durrell have kindly provided the venue for us and a buffet and refreshments will be served for all of the athletes. There is no cost to attend so please do come along.

The buffet will be served from 18:00 to 18:30 at which point we will start proceedings. As usual we will award the main club perpetual trophies (including some new ones for this year) plus prizes for duathlon and triathlon series and certificates for everyone who completed the series.

Training news - important
(29/10
/14)

As you will remember from last year we spent some time experimenting with alternative winter training venues to try and improve training conditions and safety for athletes. With this in mind we are going to make a significant change to training for the remainder of 2014 and having done so we will review and decide how we go forward in 2015.

With effect from Sunday 9th November training will restart on Sunday mornings at Haute Vallee School. Meet at 10:30 ready to run at 10:45. We believe that the area at the School and nearby will provide a good variety of training options and by moving training to daylight hours we will be able to deal with the larger number of athletes we experienced last winter in a safer and hopefully more enjoyable session. This move also fits well with the swim sessions which take place on Sundays at Haute Vallee which many of you are signed up for.

We appreciate that this change will not suit everyone, but in looking at training options it is never possible to find a time which avoids all clashes. We will review the changed format towards the end of the year and confirm arrangements from January in due course. Of course we would like to hear your feedback on the new sessions and you can email info@juniorjerseytri.com at any time to let us have your comments (we can't guarantee a reply if there are lots of comments, but these will be taken on board when the committee reviews progress).

Dates for the new year
(27/10
/14)

The annual awards evening is provisionally scheduled in for Wednesday 12th November up at Durrell. We are still working out final details and will confirm soon but please keep that date free and join us.

The first race in the Jacksons Duathlon Series has been booked for Saturday 29th November with the first race starting at 9am. Because British Triathlon is introducing restricted gearing in line with British Cycling rules for the coming year we will be checking all road bike gearing for everyone in Tristars 1 and above so we need you to sign on early at 8am please. We will also be moving up to 2015 age groups so these will be based on age as at 31st December 2015. Distances will be posted to the Events page shortly but these will be the same as last winter's events based on BTF age category distances.

We are also working on training plans for the winter and details of training restarting during November should be announced by the end of this week - keep an eye out for details here.

No swimming this weekend
(24/10
/14)

A reminder that due to the swimming competition there is no training scheduled for this Sunday. The next swim session will be on Saturday 1st November at 11am.

The updated session list can be found by following the link at the bottom of the Training page.

Extra swim session
(16/10
/14)

For those signed up for the Sunday swim training sessions for this term please note that we have been advised that there will now be an extra bonus session on Saturday 1st November from 11am to 12pm.

For anyone who has not joined the swim sessions please note that they are now full (we had over 30 in the pool last Sunday!). Anyone wanting to join will have to wait until the new term starts at the beginning of 2015 (details will be provided at the time).

Cross country and mountain bike race dates (16/10/14)

The dates for the Advisa Junior Cross Country series have been released (but not all of the venues yet). Races are for those aged 7 and over as at 31 August 2014 and you need to register at 12:45 for 13:15 first race start - there is no charge to enter.

The next race is on Saturday 18th October at Kempt Tower (towards the northern end of 5 mile road) and the following race dates announced are 15th November and 6th December (venues to be confirmed).

The JCAYA has also released its Sunday afternoon junior mountain biking event calendar which can be found on the JCAYA website. Races are free from JCAYA members and I think the cost is £3 per race for non-members.

Hever Castle triathlon
(06/10
/14)

Two junior club members travelled to the Hever Castle triathlon (part of the Castle Series) at the end of September. Freddie Lucas finished 12th overall in a huge field of over 600 in the 8-10 years age group. Lily McGarry was 57th out of 212 finishers in the 13-15 age category (15th girl). Results for all the events can be found by clicking here.
As well as sending us the picture above of himself on the podium with his cousins who also raced Freddie has also provided the following video showing his day at Hever.

Child welfare notice for Sunday swimmers (29/09/14)

Our club welfare officer has provided the following notice which is for parents of children taking part in our current Sunday afternoon swim sessions at Haute Vallee (this also applies when we use other shared changing facilities, for example at Les Quennevais):

"Dear parent/club member

In order to follow best practice in line with the British Triathlon child protection policy please be aware that when using changing facilities these may be being used by either adult athletes/parents/coaches or adult members of the general public. In order to ensure the best practice is adhered to could all adults make sure when entering/utilising changing facilities they do so with another adult present and when vacating a facility you make sure that in by doing so you are not leaving a fellow adult as the sole remaining adult in a facility that junior club members are utilising.

Thank you

Mike Swain, Club Welfare Officer"

For your information a copy of the British Triathlon policy which we aim to follow can be found on the Child Welfare section of the website. This information will also be added to that page. If you have any concerns please speak to either Mike Swain or Rachel Maher.

Race results and training information (22/09/14)

The results and race report for Saturday's triathlon at Les Quennevais are now on theResults page. Well done to everyone who finished in what were very hot conditions, especially for late September!
There is one more triathlon for the year which is a senior club event on Sunday morning at St Catherines and is open to all children aged 7 and over. Details are on the senior website (please note that it says open to over 11s only, this is wrong and anyone aged 7 or over can take part and will complete a shorter distance than shown). Teams will be allocated on the day so you don't need to put together a team, just turn up and register. All athletes will complete a swim, cycle and run.

Our triathlon pool swimming sessions started up on Sunday and feedback on the first session has been good. Please note that next week's session will be from 1:30pm to 2:30pm and will be taken by a guest coach over from the UK. If you are not already signed up for the Sunday swim sessions which run until December please speak to coach Fintan Kennedy to find out about availability and cost (looking in the pool on Sunday it doesn't look like there is much space!!). The full timetable of the Autumn training block can be found through the link at the bottom of the Training page.

Finally please remember that training this Thursday (25th) will be our last open water swim session of the year. We will be taking a break from midweek training until November (dates and venues will be provided here when these are finalised).

Triathlon on Saturday
(16/
09/14)

Sorry for the delay in finalising the time for the race this Saturday, we thought we had everything booked and then we were told that we'd have to move because of football in the afternoon. The first wave will start at 12:45pm so we need everyone to sign on and get transition set up at 12:15 please. We need to try and be on time because of the football starting later on, the timetable will hopefully go as follows (approximate swim start times).
  • 12:45 Tristars Start
  • 12:55 Tristars 1
  • 13:15 Tristars 2
  • 13:35 Tristars 3 & Youth
Race distances are set out on the Events page. Please note that a parent/guardian signature is required at sign on.

Remaining events
(08
/09/14)

The last triathlon of the Jacksons Series will be a pool-swim triathlon at Les Quennevais on 20th September. Details are now on the Events Page.

Please also note that the senior club have now opened up their relay triathlon on 28th September at St Catherines to all Tri-Stars age groups (all age 7 or over at 31/12/14). Tristars will run a mini-distance triathlon race as the first leg before handing over to older team-mates for the remaining race legs. Teams will be allocated by the organisers on the day so you do not need to form a team, just turn up and register on the morning.

No training on Air Display day
(07
/09/14)

As it is the Battle of Britain air display this week (Thursday 11th September) we will have no training at St Catherines this week. Enjoy your week off and the air display and we'll see you back in the water the following week (18th September).

Weather permitting we plan to keep swim training up until the end of this month and then have our Autumn break during October and return to Wednesday night training in November (full details will be posted here with dates and venues etc).

Main event triathlon results
(07
/09/14)

Results and race report from this morning's race at St Catherines can now be found on the Results Page. Unfortunately a glitch with the results means that the Tristars 2 times for swim and cycle sections are combined - please accept our apologies for this (all positions and finish times are present and correct though!).

Well done to everyone who took part, some real improvements shown by regulars and as always nice to see a few new faces joining in.
Swim fees
(05
/09/14)

Everyone who has signed up for the Sunday triathlon swim coaching sessions should have received an email with details from Fintan. In order to finalise the places can everyone who has signed up (and has not already paid) please bring the £45 fee to the race on Sunday morning (cash or cheques payable to "Jersey Triathlon Club").

Details of the swim sessions from September to December can be found at the bottom of the Training page.

Race details for Sunday
(05
/09/14)

Race distances for each age group and a description of the bike/run courses are now available on the Events page.

As a reminder please also note that we require all athletes to wear a wetsuit for all club training and races (including this Sunday). This policy may be reviewed following feedback we have had from athletes wishing to swim without a wetsuit, but this is the current policy for safety reasons.

Full Chantilly write-up
(01
/09/14)

13 members of the Jersey Triathlon Club headed to Chantilly, France recently for Round 4 of the Castle Triathlon Series. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Château Chantilly, 7 juniors lined up on the start line on Saturday, followed by 6 seniors on Sunday.

Juniors

Peter Holmes was first up in the 13-15 Category and following a strong bike leg, finished a creditable 12th in a field of 24. (RESULTS)

Jack Kennedy followed in the 11-12 category and following a battle royal, he finished second by the narrowest margin, another impressive result following his recent wins at Eton Dorney and Round 1 of the Castle Series in Ireland. (RESULTS)

The 8-10 category saw the highest representation from the club, with Harry and Hannah Worth, Joseph and Luke Holmes and Adam Kennedy on the start line. In the boys' field of 43, it was young Luke Holmes that impressed, finishing 17th, closely followed by Adam Kennedy in 18th, Harry Worth in 21st, closely followed by Joseph Holmes in 22nd. Hannah Worth finished 9th in a girls' field of 21. (RESULTS)

Seniors

All 6 members of the club (Demri Mitchell, Richard Worth, Fintan Kennedy, Stephen Hill, Philippa Worth and Sam Lee) competed in the adjusted Olympic distance race, consisting of 1500m swim, 44k bike and 10k cross country run. In the men's event, Demri Mitchell once again impressed, finishing 8th in a field which included Team GB triathletes David Bishop and Fraser Cartmell. Mitchell was followed by Richard Worth in 52nd, Kennedy in 63rd and Hill in 93rd in a field of over 320. In the ladies race, recent Jersey Triathon winner Sam Lee finished 5th in a field of 100, which included Team GB triathlete, Catherine Jameson. Philippa Worth with a typically strong bike leg finished a very impressive 9th. (RESULTS)

Mitchell and Lee will now turn their eyes towards qualification for the Island Games in Jersey next year.

Summer news round up
(31
/08/14)

After a long and busy summer I'm afraid I've got a bit of news stacked up waiting to go online, hopefully you can have a good read through as there is some important information below which should be of interest.

Junior swim training

Fintan has been working hard to put together a junior triathlon-specific swim session and this is due to go ahead on a trial basis from 14 September until the end of the year and the cost for this block will be £45. Sessions will take place a Haute Vallee from 12pm for 60 to 90 minutes. Athletes must be at least 7 years old and able to swim 4 lengths front-crawl comfortably. The session is designed as a top-up to your current swim training and not a replacement! Nathan Jegou will be the lead coach with support from our triathlon coaches. If you are interested in this and haven't already received the email please speak to Fintan Kennedy or email fintan@juniorjerseytri.com for full details.

Aquathlon results

Well done to all of you who have taken part in the aquathlons at training during August. Although these are not part of any official race series I'm sure that you are still interested in seeing some 'results'. I've attached the results for the 14th and 21st August aquathlons as recorded at the bottom of the Training page.

Chantilly Triathlon

A group of 7 club juniors raced at the Chantilly round of the Castle Series triathlon near Paris on 23 August. Jack Kennedy had an excellent result of 2nd in the 11-12 years category with a very tight finish between himself and the winner. Peter Holmes had a strong race in the 13-15 age group with many of the athletes being considerably bigger and older. The club really packed out the 8-10 age group with Luke Holmes just pipping Adam Kennedy to finish as first Jersey athlete with Harry Worth, Joseph Holmes and Hannah Worth all doing really well in the 100m lake swim, 4km cycle (off road) and 1.3km run.

Team Jersey also had great representation at the following day's Olympic distance triathletes with parents/coaches also successfully taking part. Full results from all of the races can be found and the Stuweb race results website.
Next race

The Jacksons summer triathlon series resumes this Sunday, 7th September, with our junior main event triathlon at St Catherines. Distances and courses will be similar to the June triathlon, I'll get details up on the events page when I get a chance this week! Tristars Start will be racing first with their race start at 8:30am so please arrive early to get racked and registered around 8am. As always we will need plenty of parents to help marshal, particularly on the road section.

Commonwealth Games Triathlon (27/07/14)

Well done to Dan Halksworth and Tom Perchard who did a great job at the Commonwealth Games Triathlon in Glasgow this week. Both athletes were well supported on the day by part of the junior section. Perhaps some of you guys will be representing Jersey at the Commonwealth Games in 2022?
Lost property - towel
(18
/07/14)

I still have a towel which was left after training a couple of weeks ago, it is a London Olympics towel and so far I've been unable to locate its owner. I have left the towel with Richard Whitewood who will have it with him at training next week, alternatively you can email me to let me know it's yours and we'll get it back to you.

Triathlon relays tomorrow
(12
/07/14)

Just to clarify the venue for the club relay races tomorrow (open to juniors from 11+) isLong Beach, Gorey and not St Catherines as originally listed on the junior calendar.

A fun night
(11
/07/14)
Another great fun night yesterday at St Catherines to celebrate the end of another school year and the imminent start to the summer holidays. Everyone certainly seemed to have a good time and by the time I got back up most of the food had been demolished so it seems everyone was well fed! Thanks to Sandy for providing the boat rides and Ollie for helping out, thanks to Sam, Della, Paula, Sarah and Nicola for serving up drinks, food and ice cream.

As a reminder training is on every Thursday right through summer, in August we are hoping to put on some Aquathlon races on Thursday evenings. As we will be short of coaches and helpers some weeks during the school holidays we would encourage any parents who are able to get in and help to volunteer if required (or bring a kayak and provide water cover). Hopefully we will be able to swim every week but a decision will be taken on the night as to whether we have enough water cover relative to children to put on a safe swim session (if not then it will be an extended run training session!).

Club 'fun night'
(07
/07/14)

This Thurdsay night (10th July) will be our summer fun night to celebrate the end of the school year (nearly). We aren't planning to do any run training so you can spend the whole hour in the water, if you have any water toys/ring/lilo/toys etc then please bring them along. We will hopefully also have some boat rides on offer.

If anyone would like to bake cakes or snacks for afterwords I'm sure they would be enjoyed by all of the kids.

Eton update
(07
/07/14)

It has been a busy weekend with triathlon racing on island on Saturday (unfortunately a bit damp but a great event with over 100 juniors) and the Eton racing in the UK on Sunday. Results from Eton can now be found online by clicking here. A full report and photos will follow but the highlights include individual wins for Jack Kennedy and Demri Mitchel and a podium finish for Ollie Turner.

More dates for your diaries
(28
/06/14)

A further triathlon has been added to the events calendar, another pool based triathlon on the afternoon of 20th September at Les Quennevais.

Before we break up for summer we will be holding a fun night at St Catherines on Thursday 10th July (6pm to 7pm). Please bring along any inflatables, water toys etc and spend the next two weeks being VERY nice to Sandy Hugh!

Jacksons triathlon results
(28
/06/14)

Results and write-up from today's race are now on the website. Well done everyone and thanks to all mums and dads for your help this morning.

Next weekend sees a group of athletes travelling over to Eton - good luck to all of you. Hopefully everyone else is entered for the Charity Triathlon at Les Quennevais on Saturday. As always, helpers are required so please come along and help the club who are taking responsibility for marshalling the two transition areas.
Jacksons triathlon 3
(19
/06/14)

I'm pleased to confirm that the venue for the next triathlon which starts from 8am on Saturday 28th June, will be at Bel Royal. The swim (which takes place close to high tide) will be in St Aubin's bay with a run up the slipway into transition. The cycle course will be a multi-lap cycle heading East towards town and back with the run taking place to the West of transition on the cycle path.

Distances will be similar to previous races for each age group but the number of laps to be completed and run turn point are yet to be worked out so lease sign on at 7:30 and make sure you are there for your race briefing. Tristars Start will start first at 8am with each older age-group wave starting subsequently.

Charity triathlon
(10
/06/14)

The organisers of the Charity Triathlon at Les Quennevais on Saturday 5th July (Leukaemia & Lymphoma Reasearch and Airtel Vodafone) have let me know that they intend to close entries to their event on 23rd June.

Last year they had over 200 children who entered the events which run from 1pm to around 4pm and there was a great atmosphere (and weather!) Distances are relatively short and with a pool swim it's an ideal first triathlon for juniors. Entries are available from children in school year 2 and upwards.

Click here for the Entry Form.

This event is on the same weekend as the Eton Triathlon so athletes travelling to that event won't be able to take part unfortunately.

Ollie's race at Blenheim
(08
/06/14)

Well done to Ollie Turner who fnished 15th in the Elite Youth Super Sprint race. Check out this for a race report. No more written reports from now on please - video summaries only now!

Jack’s race composed of 200m lake swim, 4k cycle and 2k run. A dominant swim formed the foundation of a convincing win for Jack in front of some of his Irish based family. Exiting the water with a thirty second lead, he pressed home this advantage with equally strong cycle and run legs to take a comfortable victory.

Adam achieved a great result in the u10 category, finishing in 8th position in the boys' race, with a typically strong run leg.

Not to be outdone Fintan also raced well in the Super Sprint distance triathlon finishing well up the field in 14th place and 4th veteran.

Full race results for the Lough Cutra triathlon can be found by clicking here.

Jack and Adam will compete in the castle series again later this year at the Chantilly triathlon in August along with some other club members who are travelling over to that race just North of Paris. Freddie Lucas meanwhile will be racing the Hever Castle triathlon in September so the club will be well represented in the series this year.

Jacksons triathlon results
(01
/06/14)
Well done everyone on some fantastic racing in the first open water race of the Jacksons triathlon series for this year - it was a lovely morning to be outside swimming, cycling and running. The results for Tristars Start and Tristars 1 can now be found on the results page. I will add Tristars 2 and 3 results when I have pulled these out of the senior results as soon as I can. The Tristars 2 and 3 really showed off the talent of our local junior section with Archie being in second place after the swim and Peter taking third place overall (just missing out on second place in a sprint finish). The race winners were as follows.

Race laps on Sunday
(29
/05/14)

While you were all running this evening I went round to measure the courses and can confirm that the race distances for the younger age groups on Sunday will be as follows:

Tristars Start: 2 lap cycle, run to second set of steps on breakwater and back

Tristars 1: 5 lap cycle, run to third set of steps on breakwater and back

Events this week
(28
/05/14)

A reminder that training during half-term week is on, at St Catherine's from 6pm on Thursday which will be a short sea swim followed by a run. If you don't want to do the swim or run please still come along to do the other. For any of the little guys worried about going in the sea even just a quick dip to get used to the water is better than nothing. Wetsuits are required (short sleeves/legs are acceptable).

On Sunday morning we have the second triathlon of the Jacksons summer series. The youngest two age groups (Tristars Start and Tristars 1) will start at 7am and 7:15am so you need to be down very early to get registered, bike racked and ready to go in the water. We need to try and run to time as the adults/youths race start is at 7:30am and we need to get out of their way! Race distances will be no more than the last event at Les Quennevais, the course will be straightforward and details will be provided at race briefing around 6:55am for Tristars Start and 1.

Tristars 2 and 3 will race with the introductory triathlon at 9:30 and need to be registered by 9am.

As always we will be looking for marshals (and volunteers to get in the water with the kids too!).

Summer training at St Catherine's (19/05/14)

I'm pleased to announce that we will be moving to our summer training venue at St Catherines with effect from Thursday 29th May (during half term week). On the same date training will move to the later time of 6pm to 7pm to allow more time for people to drive out to the East.

Please bring wetsuits, towels, goggles etc as we will be going for a short swim followed by a run. Note that even if you are not keen on the swim you are welcome to come for the run but it is useful to go for a quick dip to get used to being in the sea if possible.

The next triathlon is on 1st June and will be a sea swim at St Catherines (distances equal to or shorter than Les Quennevais triathlon distances) so this is your chance to have a practice.

Wetsuits are compulsory for all junior athletes if swimming at these sessions. Safety cover is provided by a sea kayak and coaches/helpers in the water so any parents who are also competent swimmers are encouraged to get in and help too.

Aquathlon race results
(15
/05/14)

Race results can now be found here - (I didn't do them so don't blame me for giving you a new surname Casper!)

I am now in possession of a green towel with Swimarathon badge attached which was left at the aquathlon on Sunday. I will have it at training this evening or else email me to let me know it's yours.

Aquathlon race report

I've managed to get hold of the senior race report from the weekend and have extracted the section on the juniors. Results to follow when I get them.

A weekend packed with sport
(12
/05/14)

The past weekend has been action packed for junior members of the club. A group of juniors travelled over to Rennes at the weekend to take part in the Super-sprint distance triathlon, against a field made up mainly of senior athletes. Adele Maher showed them all a clean pair of heels by coming home as first Lady and in 16th place overall. Jack Kennedy finished 5th in a field of nearly 90 competitors with Peter Holmes also making it into the top 10. Will Atkinson, Archie Swain and Daniel Roderick also all finished in the top half of the field! Youth athlete Ollie Turner raced later in the day finishing 16th place overall in the sprint event, and first in his category, from a field of 236. The weekend was rounded off by watching Jersey's Tom Perchard and Sam Lee taking first male and female spots in the main Olympic distance triathlon.

Junior triathletes feed up on pasta and greens before the Rennes triathlon

Meanwhile back in Jersey we had a number of juniors taking part in the traditional end-of-cross-country-season Advisa Relays. I don't have full details but I know that in the 7-8 year category we had a winning team made up of 4 junior triathletes: Casper, Freddie, Adam and Jonty. Then on Sunday 12 juniors completed the aquathlon at Aqua Splash organised by the senior section. As soon as I have more information and results I will share it with you.
Tristars - a gold medal winning cross country team

Finally our athletes turned out on Sunday evening to support the arrival of the Commonwealth Games Baton into the British Isles, which was brought in by Olympic diver Tom Daley. All of the juniors looked great in their club tracksuits which were complemented nicely by Jersey flags.
Junior triathletes turn out to welcome the Queen's Baton

With lots more coming up training continues as usual on Thursday from 5:30-6:30 at the first hut on the avenue and then next Sunday morning from 9am until 10:30 we are doing some swim time trials at Aquasplash to try to work out how the junior athletes rank against BTF standards. Bring along your swimming kit, towel and £2 to cover pool hire costs.

After a long winter of riding off-road summer cycling with the Youth Academy starts up tonight at Les Quennevais. Sign on at 5:45 for sessions starting at 6pm. Non JCAYA members are normally able to do the first session free and continue on a pay-per-session basis and I assume this will also apply this year.

More details on the JCAYA website.

Aquathlon on Sunday
(06
/05/14)

A reminder that the organisers of Sunday's aquathlon have offered to accommodate any juniors who want to race. This isn't part of the Jacksons triathlon series and will probably have two distances, under 10s and 10 and over with slightly different distances. Sign on by 13:30 at Aquasplash.

Please also note that the triathlon planned for July has been cancelled due to a lack of coaches and competitors! There will be an additional event which we will put on alongside the seniors at St Catherines on 1st June instead. Latest updates can be seen on the Events page.

Cake sale
(04
/05/14)

I received another email from Ollie this morning about yesterday's cake sale:

Thank you very much for helping me raise the fantastic sum of £136 yesterday. I hope you enjoyed the cakes. Thank you for all your support."

If you didn't make it to the race yesterday you can still donate towards Ollie's fundraising by going to his JustGiving Page.

Triathlon results
(03
/05/14)

What a fantastic event we had up at Les Quennevais this afternoon. The sun shone, we had some fantastic racing in all of the age groups and Ollie provided a great feast of tea and cakes for after the race. Fingers crossed the summer continues like this!
The race turnout is an OFFICIAL RECORD for a JTC junior event with a field of 33 starters in 5 age categories (the previous records were 31 for a Duathlon and 29 for a Triathlon).

Race results are now available on the results page. I'll do a race write up over the next few days (unless anyone else wants to volunteer to do it!).

Thanks to all of the coaches, marshals, helpers, timekeepers, cake bakers and tea servers. The smooth and safe running of today's race is down to you all!

Swim time trials, 18th May
(01/05/14)

Following the run time trials organised by Fintan a few weeks ago at FB Fields we are now planning to run a series of swim time trials. For the older Tristars age groups and Youths we can use these to calculated a BTF ranking score which is used by regional and national squads for athlete selection. No points tables are available for athletes under 12 but we still intend to run some shorter swim time trials (50m or 100m) for those which we will use to come up with an equivalent score adjusting for age and distance.

Anyone who completes both the track time trial and the swim time trial will be given a combined ranking score and this will determine if any athletes have met the Gold, Silver or Bronze standard (our our estimated equivalent for younger athletes).

The swim time trials will take place on Sunday 18th May from 9am to 10:30am at Aquasplash. There will be a chance to warm up from 9am and once we have got through the time trials we will use any remaining time for a bit of extra swim training. There will be a small charge of £2 to to help cover the cost of the lane hire.

Training information (important) (30/04/14)

This week was our last Wednesday training session until Autumn. From next week training will be on a Thursday evening at the first hut on the Avenue at the same time of 5:30 to 6:30.

In a few weeks summer training will begin and we will move out to St Catherines (probably in June) - please watch here for an update.

Well done to everyone who took part in tonight's run time trials, results can be found on a link at the bottom of the Training page (along with previous results).

Aquathlon 11th May
(30/04/14)

In the past we have run a junior aquathlon alongside the senior aquathlon at Aquasplash in May. However, due to clashes with a number of events we did not intend to run at this event. The race organisers have, however, kindly offered to put on some shorter races for any juniors who want to turn up. Details are on the senior club website. Race distances will be shorter for juniors but I don't currently have details. Minimum age 8 as at 31/12/2014 (i.e. 7 year olds who have their birthday before the end of the year can race).

Saturday race details
(29/04/14)

The first race of the Jacksons summer triathlon series takes place this Saturday (3rd May) with the first race setting off at 3pm at Les Quennevais. Please sign on in plenty of time so that we can get race briefings done before the race start as the run course is different to past years' races and we are running 4 separate races so we will be tight for time. Race categories and distances will be as follows:

Tristars Start (age 8 or under at 31/12/2014) - start time 15:00

Swim 50m (2 lengths)

Cycle 1.5km (1 lap of cycle track)

Run 600m (1 lap of run course)

Tristars 1 (age 9 or 10 31/12/2014) - start time 15:10

Swim 150m (6 lengths)

Cycle 3.0km (2 laps of cycle track)

Run 1100m (2 laps of run course)

Tristars 2 (age 11 or 12 at 31/12/2014) - start time 15:25

Swim 200m (8 lengths)

Cycle 6.0km (4 laps of cycle track)

Run 1600m (3 laps of run course)

Tristars 3 (age 13 or 14 at 31/12/2014) - start time 15:45

Swim 300m (12 lengths)

Cycle 7.5km (5 laps of cycle track)

Run 2100m (4 laps of run course)

Youths (age 15 or 16 at 31/12/2014) - start time 15:45

Youths will compete at the same time as and over the same distance as Tristars 3 (see above).

The run for all age groups will take place on the grass and will be well marked with cones and marshalled. A rough map of the run course (subject to change) is shown below. For age groups running more than one run lap you will continue straight on at the dotted line for the next lap.
A message from Ollie
(22/04/14)

My name is Ollie Turner and I am a member of the Junior Tri Club and I need your help please!

I am part of a team taking part in a cycle challenge. We are cycling from Paris to Jersey (330 miles) and raising money for the Jersey Stroke Association. Our team consists of 10 students from Le Rocquier School, we will be riding with a much bigger group of local adults. Our school has set a challenge of raising £21,000 which is a huge amount of money. We each have a personal goal of raising £1,800.

After the next junior triathlon on May 3rd I will be holding a cake sale with tea/coffee and juice where I hope to have lots of tasty cakes for you all in return for a donation.

We also have a just giving site which you can donate at by follow the link and clicking on my name.

www.justgiving.com/teams/LRScyclechallenge

Thank you so much for your support. I look forward to seeing you at the triathlon, fingers crossed for a sunny day!

Ollie

Training is on during Easter holidays (15/04/14)

A reminder that training continues over the Easter holidays at the current time and venue 17:30 to 18:30 at the first hut on the Avenue. As there is now enough daylight around it's not necessary to wear reflective vests/jackets for the remainder of the summer but as it warms up you might want to have a drink to hand.

A couple of items of lost property were left behind at training this week - one VCP tracksuit top and a small reflective waterproof jacket. I will have these with me a at training this week so please collect from me.

Training returns to the Avenue next week (27/03/14)

Please remember that training moves back to the first hut along the Avenue (opposite West Park) fromWednesday 2nd April at the earlier time of 17:30 to 18:30. This arrangement will remain until we move out to St Catherines in the summer.

Run time trials this Wednesday
(24/03/14)

In order for us to assess athletes against national standards it is useful for us to run some time trials in both running and swimming and compare against British Triathlon Federation published scales.

This Wednesday Fintan Kennedy will be organising a series of running time trials on the track at FB Field (it is our last week at FB Fields this week) so please bear this in mind when preparing for training this week, think about clothing (consider race kit) and drinks/snacks for afterwords.

BTF guidelines do not go below age 12 (which is a 1000m run, or 2.5 laps of the track), but we are looking to run shorter distance time trials for younger athletes and apply some scaling to results to give us an idea of where you are at.

Triathlon race calendar
(24/03/14)

The sun looks like it's trying to come out at the moment and there is no clearer sign that spring is in the air than the publication of the 2014 triathlon race schedule. Details of events can now be found on theevents page. Further details will be added and amendments made as the calendar evolves but in the meantime please add these dates to your diary and check back regularly for updates. There is now a lot of information on the events page so please have a good read.

Newly qualified coach
(21/03/14)

Congratulations to Richard Whitewood who successfully completed his BTF Level 1 coaching qualification recently and now adds to the complement of BTF qualified coaches at the club. We have a number of other coaches starting courses soon so we should have more success to report by the end of the year.

Youth triathlon Easter training camp (18/03/14)

2x UK Ironman Champion Daniel Halksworth and BTF Level 2 Triathlon Coach Andy Kemp will be holding an Easter Triathlon Training Camp on 14th and 15th April. Sessions will begin at 9am sharp and finish around 3pm each day.

The camp is aimed at athletes between the ages of 15 and 20 (BTF age categories Youth and Junior) who have a keen interest in triathlon and it will teach many new techniques which they can adapt to their own training programs.

Spaces will be limited and are being offered on a first come basis together with a £10 charge for each day.

Time table:

Day 1 Mon 14th April will consist of a 2hr pool session and run technique aimed at run efficiency.

Day 2 Tues 15th April long bike session with transition technique and bike to run brick session to finish.

To confirm your place please contact Andy Kemp by email or text 07797 784075.

Durrell Duathlon
(16/03/14)

If you didn't make it down to Durrell for the Duathlon this morning then you missed a great event in the sunshine. Our race winners were Luke Holmes, Elizabeth Atkinson, Dan Roderick and Lily Scott. Results and race report are on the Results page.

A big thanks to Durrell for their part in putting this event together and also to Sarah Corcoran and Vaughan Robinson Robinson who organised the seniors (and 'big juniors' race) who also helped out. Thanks to all of the many parents who marshalled on the course and also to Peter, Will and Adele who were too old to race today but kindly came along to help marshal and timekeep which was a great help.

Advisa cross country results
(15/03/14)

Well done to everyone taking part in this year's Advisa cross country series organised by Jersey Spartan Athletics Club. As always there were lots of young triathletes at the sharp end of the final race in the series today at Noirmont.

Elizabeth Atkinson already had the series sewn up for the under 9 girls but secured her fifth win in a row today. Hannah Worth managed to (just) hold off Eva Scott to take 3rd in the series. Freddie Lucas had the boys' under 9 title wrapped up but was pushed back to 3rd place in today's race in a close finish.

In the under 13 girls race Adele Maher managed second in today's race but that was enough to give her the joint series lead (and victory on a tie breaker by my, unofficial, reckoning). Likewise in the under 13 boys series the scores were tied between Jack Kennedy and Isaac Du Val with no way of separating them they will be sharing the trophy this year. Peter Holmes pipped Will Atkinson for third in the series despite Will having a race victory this year.

None of the top 3 under 15 boys was present for today's race due to a clash with the English Schools cross country, but that didn't matter as Sam Maher took series victory ahead of William Brown and Ollie Turner who tied on points (my unofficial take is that William should take the silver spot).

Full results from todays race can be downloaded here. Series results here.

Durrell Duathlon on Sunday
(11/03/14)

A reminder about the Durrell Duathlon which takes place on Sunday morning up at the Durrell Wildlife Park. For anyone aged 15 or over (age as at 31 December 2014) you will be racing with the seniors, and need to sign on at 6:45am! The junior race is open to children in school years 2 to 6 and sign on will be from 8:30am (the junior race start will be after the seniors have finished so exact start time will be confirmed on the morning at race briefing). The cost is £5 for the 'senior' race and £2 for the juniors (this is a fund raiser for Durrell but is still great value).

Details on the Durrell website.

ADDENDUM: The cycle course is off-road and therefore mountain bikes should be used for the cycle section.

Off island racing - Chantilly
(10/03/14)

There are a number of opportunities to race off island this year (see earlier notes on Eton, Rennes and Hever Castle). The club is able to provide a contribution towards travel costs for Eton and Rennes and, subject to budget, other travel to race in the UK and France.

A group of children will be travelling to a race at Chantilly in France over the bank holiday weekend in August. This race is part of the Castle Triathlon Series and we have had local families race there before and would recommend it for both children and adults.

The website for the race can be found by clicking here. Richard Worth has passed me the following event tips and information:

1) Lake swim - but long transition including steps!

2) Flat course - so time trial bike if possible

3) Run course is flat but all off road so can be muddy so pick shoes with decent tread i.e cross country if wet

4) Dolce Hotel is well located - 5mins cycle away from the event. Difficult to book a family room on line - but worth ringing and reserving a room - there is normally a triathlon reduced rate see main tri website for code - payment not required up front.

5) Le prego italian - good for carb loading pre event - but advise to book and go early as service can be slow.

Kids event very well organised - same guys as Hever (brian adcock) - so briefings etc., are all in english. Lots of support in the water. Adults allowed to help younger age groups in transition. All off road so cyclocross tyres needed if possible.

Club kit update
(05/03/14)

As you all know we have fantastic club tracksuits which nearly all of the athletes and coaches are now sporting. Debbie Kennedy has been organising this and has a few different sizes in stock if anyone else needs a tracksuit.

The committee has been discussing adding further club kit. The next priority will be a club tri-suit as that is the item which we are hearing most demand for. Unfortunately due to the high demand for subsidised tracksuits we are already over-budget on kit for this year and it has been agreed that we won't be able to organise a club tri-suit this year. This will be our main priority for next year.

In the meantime I am sure that many of you will be desperate to get something for this season. To help with this this link shows a tri-suit which several of our athletes are currently using. It is possible that we may use this as the base for a club suit so if you do get one of these this year we will try to offer retrospective printing of logo, sponsor etc to match the club kit (this can't be guaranteed but we will do what we can).

Latest traning and racing information (02/03/14)

Well done to all those taking part in this morning's duathlon. Results and report are now available on theResults page.

A reminder that training during March returns to FB Fields, meet at 17:55 latest for a 18:00 start. Please remember that anyone who brings a child under the age of 7 to training must ensure that a responsible adult stays with the small group throughout the session. Coaches are unfortunately not able to take responsibility for any under 7s. Training is designed for children aged 7 and over but we do allow a concession for siblings under 7 subject to parental supervision.

Duathlon on Sunday
(26/02/14)

The next race in the Jacksons Duathlon Series takes place on Sunday 2nd March at Les Quennevais. Sign on at 8:30am for 9:00 race start (7 & under) and 9:15 race start (other age groups). Distances will be as for earlier races at Les Quennevais.

Age 7 500m run 1.5km cycle 500m run

Age 8,9 & 10 800m run 3km cycle 800m run

Age 11&12 1500m run 4.5km cycle 800m run

Age 13 & over 1500m run 6km cycle 800m run

Training
(18/02/14)

Training continues for the remainder of February at Fort Regent (meet at 5:50pm for 6pm start). Training will still be on during half term but as we will be low on numbers of both coaches and athletes can everyone who is planning to be at training on 26th February please let Della know so that she can plan the session.

In March we will return to FB fields again (6pm - 7pm) and in April we will return to the first shelter at (opposite West Park) and revert to 5:30pm-6:30pm by which time we should have plenty of light evenings for running. Keep an eye on here for the latest or in case plans change.

Can I also have another reminder to everyone with club tracksuits to please mark your name on the label and for children (and ideally parents) to check you have the correct kit after training. We have a second missing tracksuit top from last week which does have a name on it so can everyone please double check your child's top (and check you haven't accidentally acquired an extra one).

Senior duathlons
(11/02/14)

Some of the senior section races this year will once again be open to the older juniors this year. The next races are the duathlon on 16th February at St Catherines and the Durrell Duathlon on 16th March both of which will be open to all those in the Youth age group (that is anyone aged 15 or over at 31 December 2014). You will need a parent to sign a parental consent form at registration if you are under 18. Details are on the senior club website.

The Durrell Duathlon will also be running a junior race following the senior event. Due to limited space available for off-road racing the race will only be open to children in school years 2 to 6, race distances will be fairly short and as the course is off-road you will need to ride on a mountain bike. I think that the entry fee for children at the Durrell Duathlon will be £2 (which goes to Durrell). This event does not form part of the Jacksons Duathlon Series. Details are on the events page.

Hever castle triathlon
(10/02/14)

I've had the following from Ian Lucas (Freddie's dad):

"Dear All

Freddie has three cousins who live in Kent (7, 8 & 13) and who have competed in the last two years' of heaver castle triathlon. They are really keen for Freddie to join them this year so we are considering taking the car overnight on the Friday and back mid day Sunday to compete on the Saturday.

In theory we would have a spare seat in the car and for a bike on the bike rack if anyone else is interested in joining in? I think it might be a bit more family fun day atmosphere than eaton dorney but take a look at the link :

http://www.castletriathlonseries.co.uk/junior-tri/

We have plenty of time as it is the last w/e in September 27/28th, but I thought it was worth sharing... this rain has to finish one day... I hope? Also if anyone has been to the heaver castle tri before and has any advice or tips we would be grateful.

Thanks

Rachel and Ian Lucas"

On a related point, we have applied for funding for the Eton and Rennes races from ESC and this will be the priority for any States grant provided. However, if anyone is travelling to races in the UK (or France) such as this please hold on to travel receipts until the end of the year. If there is any budget left over at the end of the year then we will ask for any claims to be submitted and some of this could be allocated to you.

Swimarathon 2014 - Reminder
(09/02/14)

Please can you let Della or Paula know by this Tuesday if you can make the team for the swimarathon as the entries need to be submitted.

We have been allocated lanes at the Swimarathon once again for next year. We have two lanes at 8am on Saturday March 15th. The aim is to have two teams of juniors, the seniors may also have a couple of teams alongside.

Della is organising the Swimarathon teams, can you please email Della to let her know names of children who would like to take part in the Swimarathon so that she can organise the teams.

Duathlon - CANCELLED
(07/02/14)

Unfortunately due to the weather forecast for heavy winds on Sunday morning it is not likely to be safe for cycling at Les Quennevais and therefore we have taken the decision to cancel the race this weekend. We will try to reschedule if we can find a suitable date which doesn't clash with other events.

Rennes triathlon
(03/02/14)

The Rennes triathlon takes place on 11th May 2013. As well as the main senior events (Sprint and Olympic distance) they have a short race which is open to both seniors and juniors (250m swim, 8km cycle and 2.5km run). Some families are already planning to go to Rennes. We are able to take a group of up to 10 juniors who will travel by ferry with 2 adults to the race (ferry out on 10th May and back 11th May). We are opening this up at the moment to juniors who are in year 7 or above. Can you email me atdave@juniorjerseytri.com to let me know if you would like to put your name down for this event.

Reminder - training at Fort Regent (03/02/14)

Please remember that training this week and throughout February will be up at Fort Regent - meet at 17:50. See you there.

Training
(31/01/14)

Well done to all of you who trained on Wednesday night - for those who weren't there the States forgot to turn the floodlights on leaving the track in the pitch dark and we had to improvise the session!

As a reminder during March February we will be training Wednesday evenings up at Fort Regent. Meet at 17:50 near the Soft Play/Music service where we will be split into groups and heading off to wherever the planned session will be around the Fort.

Please be prepared for both indoor and outdoor activities. This means wearing layers so that you can take layers off for indoor sessions. Please also bring reflective vests/jackets which may be needed on some evenings.

Lost property
(22/01/14)

Freddie's Jacksons club top went missing at training this evening - can everyone who was there double check that hey haven't picked it up by mistake (I'm not sure if his name was on it but if you have ended up with an extra top then that could be it!). It's great to see everyone in their kit for training and races and I know that most of the juniors do have their names written on the label but if you haven't yet it's a good idea with lots of similar tops about at club events! If you come across Freddie's top can you let me know by email (webmaster@juniorjerseytri.com) and return it to him or pass to Dave or Della.

Good training session tonight everyone - well done.

Next race
(22/01/14)

The next duathlon will hopefully take place on Sunday 9th February subject to confirmation from ESC of our booking for Les Quennevais. This will be confirmed here as soon as possible and on the Events page.

Race numbers
(21/01/14)

We are missing a couple of race numbers from Saturday's race as I think some of you rushed off to get warm as soon as you had finished. If you have one of these could you please hand it in to Della at training on Wednesday. Numbers missing from Saturday are 51 and 58 (we know who you are!!) We are also missing number 53 from an earlier race so if you have this can you also get it back to Della.

Off-road duathlon
(20/01/14)

Very well done to everyone who took part in the off-road duathlon this weekend, particularly to all of those in the 11&12 years category who suffered the most miserable conditions they are likely to ever race in! The results are now posted on the 2014 results page.

Junior section business plan
(17/01/14)

A copy of the junior section business plan which has been created by the committee to set out the objectives and priorities of the club over the coming year is now available on the Links and Documents page on the website. Your feedback on the contents of the plan are always welcome as are any suggestions for the following year's plan which will be put together in Autumn.

Safeguarding and protecting children policy (15/01/14)

Details of our safeguarding and protecting children policy can be found on the Child Welfare page which has now been added to the site. Note that Mike Swain has kindly agreed to act as the club's Child Welfare Officer and can be contacted using the email address on that page if you have any concerns.

Eton Dorney youth triathlon races (15/01/14)

Many of you will have seen that in the past a large number of the junior athletes travel to Eton each July to race in the youth series races which are great quality and well organised races from age 9 upwards (age as at 31/12/2014). There is also a scootathlon for siblings aged 4 and up! The budget for the year has been agreed and the aim is to provide an increased subsidy for athletes travelling to this race to get as many as possible to race at this level. The subsidy will be up to £60 per junior athlete and will be partly funded by they club and partly by a grant from the Education Sport and Culture department. Athletes must be club members and should wear a club tracksuit at the event. In order to receive the subsidy parents will have to submit receipts for travel costs.

The club will not be organising a group travel, it is up to individual parents to organise and take children. Paula Turner (paulaturnerjsy@msn.com) is acting as the central contact person so if you have any questions please email her in the first instance and please also let her know if you make any travel or hotel bookings so that she can keep a list of what others are doing and share with the group. Details of the race can be found by clicking here.

We are also hoping to arrange for a group of athletes (year 7 and above) and two coaches to travel to a race in Rennes on 11th May this year. Details to be confirmed soon.

Where is the duathlon on Saturday? (14/01/14)

The race on Saturday takes place on a headland close to Mont Rossignol in St Ouen (opposite side of Mont Rossignol to the Val de la Mare reservoir). To get there take the turning on the left just after St Ouen's Manor when heading towards St Ouen's Village. Then take the first left which will lead you down to Mont Rossignol.

To get to the race venue you need to go right just before the entrance to Val de la Mare (Rue de la Campagne) and then take the track to the left but don't take this turning as this is private and there is no parking. If driving carry on down Mont Rossignol, parking will be sign-posted at the bottom. There will also be signs from the car park back up to the race venue.

The map below shows the venue - I'm not sure exactly where the parking is but it's somewhere below the P shown in the image below. The route from the car-park to the venue may be more direct than this if there is a short-cut!

Thanks to Colin Hidrio for sorting this out for us.
Charity triathlon in July
(14/01/14)

I've been passed details of the charity triathlon organised by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research with Airtel Vodafone. Unfortunately once again the date clashes with the Eton Triathlon in the UK. Details and entry forms should be going out through the schools again closer to the time.
Cross country runners
(12/01/14)

Well done to everyone who ran on a lovely sunny day on Saturday. As always we had quite a few medal winners; Elizabeth Atkinson won gold in the 7-8 girls with Eva Scott getting the bronze. No surprise to see Freddie take gold once again in the boys 7-8 race but a great run from Adam Kennedy saw him challenge Freddie on the run to the line and pick up the silver medal. Thomas Atkinson took the bronze medal in the 9 to 10 year old boys' race. The boys' 11-12 age group is dominated by triathlon club members with Isaac du Val taking gold this week ahead of Jack Kennedy, Peter Holmes got the bronze medal ahead of Will Atkinson. Adele Maher took gold in the girls' race. In the boys 13-14 age group Hampshire Champion Sam Maher dominated whilst Ollie Turner got the better of William Brown to take the silver medal.
Next tracksuit order
(11/01/14)

Debbie Kennedy has let me know that the next order for tracksuits will be going in on Thursday so if you would like one in the next batch she will need to know by Wednesday evening at training (she can work out sizes for most kids based on who's got what already).

Training during March
(10/01/14)

A further update on training venues. We will continue at FB fields through January and in February we will switch to Fort Regent for training. The venue for March will be confirmed and will depend how it goes at FB Fields and Fort Regent. This will give us options for training indoors and in sheltered areas outdoors if the weather is unpleasant and we will also have space for some "classroom" activities which should be useful too.

We are currently experimenting with different venues to try and find out what will work for us as well as developing a range of training sessions which are varied and help develop athletes in a range of ways. Once we've trialled these venues we hope to put together a programme in advance of next winter so there should not be so much chopping and changing. I have to say thanks to Della who has been doing the liaison with Education, Sport and Culture to find out what our options are and to arrange the bookings. If you have any comments (positive or negative) on any of the venues then we would love to hear from you. I'll keep you posted nearer the time as a reminder of the change but the plan is to meet beside the soft play area/educational music service at 5:50 where we will split into groups and go to the location of the specific session. In the meantime see you all back at FB Fields next Wednesday ready to run at 6pm.

Good luck to everyone running tomorrow.

Updates
(09/01/14)

First of all I'd like to say a big thank-you to Danny and Andy from Sports Bugs who came along to play some warm-up games with us last night. It certainly seemed that you all enjoyed yourselves and we have some good ideas which can be incorporated into our warm-up in the future. Training continues at FB Fields again next week at the same time (6pm to 7pm).

Anyone who has ordered a tracksuit and didn't get it last night can collect from Debbie Kennedy either at training or the next race.

This Saturday is the next cross country race in the Advisa series at Kempt Tower, sign on from 12:45, first race starting at 13:15. Races are free to enter and open to children from school years 3 up to year 9, just turn up and sign on on the day. Look for the red runner signs close to the North end of the Five Mile Road. Let's see lots of you showing off your new Junior Triathlon tracksuits on Saturday afternoon!

Further duathlon information
(05/01/14)

A quick update on my earlier post - it turns out that Val de la Mare will NOT be available for race day parking as stated. Arrangements are currently being made but it is likely parking will be further down Mont Rossignol meaning a bit of a longer walk round to the race start. Once the details have been confirmed I'll try to put up a map to show the parking and race venue. Full details to follow.

Hampshire XC championships
(04/01/14)

Results are just in from today's Hampshire Cross Country Championships at a very muddy Fleming Park in Eastleigh. The weather has been so bad that the planned start/finish area was flooded and parts of the course had to be rerouted after grass banks subsided!

In the under 13 boys' event the top three Jersey runners are all familiar triathlon regulars, Jack Kennedy took a bronze medal, Isaac Du Val was 6th and Peter Holmes came home in 11th in a field of 66. The Jersey Spartan team (four runners) was just pipped for the bronze medal by Guernsey. In the girls' under 13 race Adele Maher was 2nd Jersey finisher and 24th overall in a field of 56 finishers.

The under 15's race was fantastic for our boys with Sam Maher taking the gold medal, Ollie Turner 10th, William Brown 23rd just ahead of Joe Hugh in a fantastic 25th place in a field of 58 finishers. With all four Spartans boys well within the top half of the field they also took home the team silver, comfortably ahead of the Guernsey team who took the bronze.

Links to all of the results can be found on the Hampshire Athletics website.

Happy New Year!
(02/01/14)

Happy New Year to all athletes and parents. There's lots of news to get you up to speed with for the first part of this year below.

Next Duathlon

The next race in the Duathlon series is a departure from the normal format with our first off-road duathlon on Saturday 18th January at Mont Rossignol (parking will be at Val de la Mare which is on the opposite side of the road from the race course). Sign on from 12:30, the first race will start at 13:00. Important points to note:

(1) The venue (and car parking) is on private land, please respect this and behave appropriately. Thanks to Lyndon Farnham and neighbours for use of the land (and Jersey water for parking

(2) A mountain bike will be required for the course.

(3) Each age category will race separately due to the limited space in our transition area and to avoid having riders of significantly different speeds racing on a course which is very narrow in places.

(4) The 13 & Over age category will race with the seniors which I believe will be a 2pm sign on for 2:30pm start (TBC - keep an eye on the senior website/facebook). Although you big guys will race with the seniors I expect that your run course will be shorter (e.g. 1 lap instead of their 2).

(5) This is the first time we've run this course so we won't get it perfect, please keep an ear out for race briefing and instructions on where to put bikes etc and try to keep the course and transition clear when you are not racing. We need to be finished by 2pm so that the seniors can get their course set up.

Club memberships

These are now due and can be purchase online through Entry Central. Please see the Membership pagefor links to online memberships. Please note that you will need to have a membership to purchase subsidised club kit (if you've already bought this please renew online ASAP!)

Club tracksuits

If you haven't got one already you can't help but notice everyone else wearing theirs, you all look great. The latest batch are at the printers and will be available for collection at the January duathlon. There are a few spares in a couple of sizes available and if you want to try one for size we now have members with pretty much every size so Debbie can help you find the right one to try on. Tracksuits are priced at only £10 each due to the generous support of Jacksons to subsidise the cost (the subsidy for one tracksuit is more than the membership fee so it's more than worthwhile joining up!)

Racing away

We have ambitious plans for getting more athletes gaining off-island race experience in 2014. As usual we will be supporting the youth triathlon races at Eton Dorney on Sunday 6th July. We won't be arranging group travel but the committee has agreed an increase in the subsidy which will be paid per travelling athlete to help parents keep the costs down - more details to follow. In the meantime it might be worth considering saving the date and looking online for entry details (note that unfortunately once again this date clashes with the charity triathlon at Les Quennevais organised by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research).

Training

Training resumes on Wednesday 8th January. Please note that we will be training at FB Fields from 6pm to 7pm (a change from the normal winter routine). We have some interesting sessions planned!

Jacksons Duathlon Series race 2
(15/12/13)

The rain just about held off for the second race of the Jacksons series this morning and there was some really close racing and some fantastic individual results. The battle in the oldest age group saw a new run course record and first ever sub 5 minute lap, for Sam Maher on his first run. Thanks for all of the help marshalling and course organising today - we will be back for more racing in our first ever off-road duathlon in January (more details to follow here).

Results and the race write-up from today's race can be found in the results section.

(A mistake was spotted in the results and reported to me, I have amended results uploaded 17:05 - hopefully they are correct this time!)
Training plans
(14/12/13)

Please remember that next Wednesday's training (18 December) will be the last training session of 2013 (Christmas fancy dress optional!). Training resumes on Wednesday 8th January at 6pm at the running track at the FB Fields. Training will continue at FB Fields during January and February. Details of the training venue for March onwards will be confirmed in the new year.

Duathlon this Sunday
(13/12/13)

The second race in the Jacksons Duathlon Series takes place on Sunday morning at Les Quennevais. Distances and routes will be the same as the previous race:

Age 7 start 9:00am Run 500m, Cycle 1.5km, Run 500m

Age 8,9 & 10 start 9:15am Run 800m, Cycle 3km, Run 800m

Age 11 & 12 start 9:15am Run 1500m, Cycle 4.5km, Run 800m

Age 13+ start 9:15am Run 1500m, Cycle 6km, Run 800m

Please note that age categories are determined by your age at the start of the series (30 November 2013) so that you do not change category during the series. Please arrive to sign-on and get your bike set up in transition area at 8:30.

Please note that we are making plans for an off-road (mountain bike) duathlon in January which is expected to be on the afternoon of 18th January (in place of the original 26th January event). Other dates in the series are being finalised and we are looking to move dates to avoid a clash with February half term. Details will be confirmed on the events page as soon as they are finalised.

Controlling pace
(06/12/13)

I came across an interesting set of data this week which I thought was relevant in the context of our pace judgement running session on Wednesday. The data is the 50m splits from Chinese swimmer Sun Yang who broke his own 1500m world record at the London Olympics last year.

It's not just the overall time of 14:31.02 which is impressive but more importantly the swimmer's pace judgement. I've put the data for each of the 50m split times into the chart below. The blue line plots the time for each 50m (one length of the Olympic pool = 2 lengths of Les Quennevais) whilst the red line shows the average 50m time (excluding the first 50m for which he had a dive and the final 100m when he sprinted for the finish). The consistency of those middle 27 lengths is quite breathtaking - not once did he stray even as much as half a second from his average pace with almost all times being +/- 0.3s.
Whatever your swim/cycle or run speed the quickest way to complete the distance is to hold a steady pace, Yang shows just how effective it can be when you get it right.

Annual memberships now due
(05/12/13)

Annual memberships through Entry Central are now live. You can join by following the links on theMembership Page. I'm just getting to grips with setting up Entry Central so please bear with me if there are any problems and let me know by emailing me.

Swimarathon 2014
(04/12/13)

We have been allocated lanes at the Swimarathon once again for next year. We have two lanes at 8am on Saturday March 15th. The aim is to have two teams of juniors, the seniors may also have a couple of teams alongside.

Della is organising the Swimarathon teams, can you please email Della to let her know names of children who would like to take part in the Swimarathon so that she can organise the teams.

Winter training
(04/12/13)

Training will continue as usual tonight and for the next two weeks which takes us up until Christmas (last session 18th December). We also have the second duathlon of the series on Sunday 15th December.

After two weeks of resting and restoring energy levels through the consumption of large amounts of chocolate we return to training on Wednesday 8th January at FB Fields. To allow for additional travel time through the tunnel at what may be a congested time training at FB Fields will be from the slightly later time of 6pm to 7pm each Wednesday. We will be at FB Fields until the end of February, further details of training after February will be published here.

Duathlon results
(30/11/13)

Well done to everyone who raced this morning in what were pretty nice conditions. Race results and the race write up can now be found on the 2014 Results page for you to pore over.

If anyone took any photos at this morning's race I'd appreciate copies which could be used on the website and/or the JEP. Please email them to webmaster@juniorjerseytri.com.

Duathlon race 1
(29/11/13)

The winter season finally gets under way with the delayed race 1 of the Jacksons Duathlon Series at Les Quennevais tomorrow morning. Please sign on at 8.30am and be ready to start racing at 9am.

Distances will be confirmed in the morning at race briefing but we are looking at reducing the second run distance compared to last years events, particularly for the younger ones so please make sure you are at the race briefing (around 8.55am) and listen carefully to the instructions.

Club tracksuits
(21/11/13)

The first order of club tracksuits has arrived and will be going for printing soon. Debbie has been measuring up those who have ordered now that she has an idea of sizes and will do her best to make sure you get a good fit.

Now that we have a better idea of the costs the committee has agreed that the club subsidy can continue for the time being and therefore the club tracksuits will continue at £10. This is a fantastic deal for what seem to be good quality tracksuits and we will all look very smart in our new uniform. If you haven't already placed an order can you email kit@juniorjerseytri.com to let Debbie know which child you want to order for.

We hope to be able to add more kit during the year (possibly a tri-suit next) so watch this space.

Time trial results
(21/11/13)

I know that many of you were keen to see your times from the recent run time trials, the Excel document with the times can now be found at the bottom of the Training page. There were a couple of hiccups with the distances which we are aware of so don't worry too much about this, we will repeat the session and get the distances all right again over the winter training period.

Change of duathlon date
(18/11/13)

Unfortunately due to ongoing work at Les Quennevais and no guarantee from them that the work will be finished by this weekend we have arranged for the first of the Jacksons Junior Duathlon races to be put back to Saturday 30th November. Sorry for the short notice but again the venue issue is out of our hands and there was a risk that the track may not have been in a safe condition for cycle racing.

Well done to all of you who took part in cross country, swimming and mountain biking events over the weekend, I saw some good performances from club members in all three.
Training resumes
(11/11/13)

Training starts back this Wednesday at 5:30pm from the first shelter along the avenue. Please remember that bright clothing is preferred and a reflective jacket/bib is compulsory (these can be obtained at local sports shops and also in the 99p store). We look forward to seeing you there ready to run.

Waterpolo fun tournament
(11/11/13)

Jersey WaterPolo are holding a fun tournament for sports clubs in Jersey and have invited the triathlon club to take part. Details are below. If you would like to take part then please let Della know (della@juniorjerseytri.com). We will need a team of 10 to take part but if we can't get enough you may be able to team up with some other clubs. Please note that this clashes with a JCAYA mountain bike race so please check before putting your name down for this as you won't be able to do both.
Annual awards evening
(7/11/13)

Large numbers of junior triathletes, parents and coaches gathered at the Jacksons Porsche showroom in St Peter recently for the annual presentation of prizes and review of the year. Coach Dave Holmes welcomed athletes and guests and gave an overview of a very busy year, with triathletes representing both club and Island in international events as well as the many on island series events.

The main award, the Michael Lucas trophy for triathlete of the year (2013) was presented to two very committed and deserving young athletes Jack Kennedy and Adele Maher.

Next up was the Fairbairn Award for the most improved athlete which was presented by John Falle, a long term supporter of local junior triathlon. This year's winner was Adam Kennedy who has worked hard over the year and in particular showed significant improvement in the run sector of this multi discipline sport.

The Halksworth trophy for most outstanding race performance was presented by double UK Ironman Champion Dan Halksworth. The recipient was Ollie Turner for several outstanding performances, but in particular, his fifth place in the British Triathlon Federation High Performance Drafting Triathlon at Eton, Dorney in July.

The final award, The Jacksons Shield, was presented by Andy Stubbs of Jacksons, the main sponsors of the Junior Triathlon Club. This award reflects outstanding commitment and determination throughout the course of the season and the deserving winners were Rosie McManus and Archie Swain.

Trophies and medals were also presented to the top 3 in each series for the 2013 season as well as certificates to all athletes who completed the Duathlon and Triathlon series.
